Bilingualism

I am not bilingual, and even with two years of spanish I can barely say cat. However, I have two friends that are bilingual and asked them if has benefited their language. They both learned Spanish and English at the same time as young children. Both have said, that they have always been able to easily distinguish grammar errors. They also said that English class, was often easier for them than other children.

At first, I didn't understand how this happens. Then I thought that in learning two languages, they had to learn the rules for both. Learning the rules for both, implemented them in their heads. This made English and grammar classes, and using both lan guages a lot earlier, I believe.

  1. That was very true about learning another language. I took seven years of German, and the first portion of learning German was to learn rules in English before we could advance to anything else. We had to recap all the rules regarding how English sentences were put together (syntax, verb usage, nouns, ect.). Since German is similar to English in many ways, the same rules applied when putting sentences together. Therefore, you need to have a strong foundation in your native language before attempting another language. As a result, learning a foreign language is beneficial, in that it can help enhance your native language.
