ADHD Article

I liked this article. It was informative and I learned some statistics I did not know about ADHD. As a child, I grew up with some cousins who had ADHD. I had a hard time with their lack of being able to pay attention to things very long, but I loved playing with them. They were always so creative and spontaneous when we were playing or doing something artistic for school. I did not know at the time they had a disorder, but I did know they were different some how. There were times when I wished to be like one of them, just so creative and funny. Now being funny was not a trait or gift I had. No matter how hard I tried to tell jokes, I never told them right. My cousins always bailed me out.

I wanted to explain about one of my cousins that had ADHD really bad. Her mother was not a good mother. Her mother had ADHD disorder and while she was pregnant, she smoked and drank. The child did not have much of a chance of not getting ADHD. Family members stepped in to have the custody of my cousin taken from the mother when she was just 3 months old due to the mother neglecting the infant. The mother had added even more problems to her infant by putting alcohol in her bottle and not changing her or caring for her needs at all. It was so sad. The mother got charged with neglect and lost rights to her daughter. My cousin's name was Missy and thank goodness family stepped in and did something. Missy is now married and has been for 10 years and a good mother herself.

Missy had huge battles to overcome with herself including her health issues, addictions, ADHD disease, and bipolar disorder. If it had not been for her patient guardian, family, medical doctors, and medicine, she would not be where she is today. They all taught her to work with her emotions and gave her medicine to help with the control. I have a lot of respect for Missy and those that worked with her. She has a good life because of all the positive help and her own determination to be better. I know the doctors said she was born with ADHD, malnutrition, had liver problems, and later diagnosed her with being Bipolar. Her guarded immediately started by taking care of Missy's nutritional needs, working to get her health up to where should be. Missy had never been held by her mother or shown love and affection. Her guardian and family all helped with teaching her what love and affection was, to control her emotions, and getting her the proper medication. She went to counseling and was able to graduate from high school and be successful.

This is my reasoning for I agree with this article on ADHD. Missy is a perfect example of there theory on how to properly help ADHD kids and parenting. It really works when they use mental doctors, medical doctors, and correct medication as a team. The ways the counselors helped Missy to control her emotions and attention were very successful. Missy still lives by them today.
