Do we forget about the victims in pursuit of get the criminal off?
On the topic on the Short film we watched today in class, I have to say that I can't begin to understand why everyone is always so concerned with the mental health of the person committing the crime, (in this instance Andrea Yates). While it seems to me that maybe society could learn from her, where is the concern for the victims, ( those five Innocent kids)? This question seems to ring true for me every time I hear that some one has committed a crime. Yes, at first everyone is talking about the victims, but by the time the trial gets here it seems that everyone is focused on the criminal instead of the victims. While I understand that the supposed reason for the trial is to get them justice, it seems to me that by this time in the justice system that all the focus is on how to get the criminal off! Like I said that is just my opinion before someone takes offense. I Just can't understand the reasoning behind letting some one like Andrea Yates pretty much get away with murder. Again that is just my opinion. Yes, I understand that she was diagnosed as having post pardum depression that got out of hand , as well as her medication being switched around to make the Doctor more comfortable with the medications she was taking as well as the side affects. Yet, I can't get over the fact that no body did anything to prevent this senseless tragedy. I fully believe that while the husband is to blame as well, since he knew the risks of her having more children, I have to hold Andrea Yates responsible for not saying no. There is no mention that she was an abused wife, therefore she should have said NO! I had a friend that got this same way after having her son. A bunch of us took turns staying with her until she got back to her old self, we made sure that both her and the baby were safe. I feel that with all the friends and family that Andrea Yates had some one would have been more than willing to help her if she would have asked. So, I still say that she in more ways than one made the choice way before that day to kill her kids. I don't know, that is just my opinion. What do you think?

I agree! Murder is really one of the most terrible things you could do either morally or ethically. On the other hand though, locking them up in a mental facility is probably a good enough punishment. I don't see her enjoying her life at all in the future. Being pumped full of drugs everyday is not my idea of a good life. All that said though, I still think that it's a waste of money to keep her alive, she probably wants to die anyways. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it's true, those five kids deserve justice.
ReplyDeletei totally agree with you Yates should not have been let free for doing what she did. In my opinion i think she should of been put to death for murdering five children. Everyone says that she was mental but if there own wife or husband killed there children they would want them thrown in jail. I can understand the argument about her being taken off of her medicene but at the same time her husband should of had her put back on.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think the criminal justice system is looking to let anybody "off" on any crimes, quite the opposite actually. A good attorney with a lot of evidence that Yates was not in control of her actions is what helped her case.
ReplyDeleteIt's repulsive to think of someone killing or hurting children. It made me angry at first to hear that Yates had killed her children. I had to ask myself why am I angry? I had no relation to these people and I'm probably not going to lose any sleep over it. Actually I feel sorry more than anything for her and the Yates family.
Postpartum depression isn't a new disorder. In 1892 a female author named Charlott P. Gilman story The Yellow Wallpaper was published. It's a short story about a women experiencing P.D..
It was a very controversial subject that people tend to get angry about. Maybe if our society would take these disorders serious tragedy's like this could avoided.
Maybe someday someone you know will experience P.D.. Would you use knowledge and help this person? Probably you would, Yates gave our modern society a huge lesson that P.D. is not something to be taken lightly, or you could just stone this ill person to death. Rocks are cheap.
Murder is wrong, and the murderer needs to be punished. More times than not a person will not have any outward symptoms that something is wrong with them.No one knows what is wrong with that person until it is too late; and they have murdered one person or many people. I do not believe in the death penalty. I believe that a murderer should spend the rest of their life in prison living with what they have done to themselves, the victims, and the victims families.
ReplyDeleteWell, like Keegan said, I don't think anybody really got off of murder. As for the victims, they are not being forgot, the focus needs to be on the criminal so justice can be done. What she did was awful, everybody knows that, but don't you think that the family would want that person to be locked up? Whether or not she in a prison or a mental institution, she's still gone! When that is taken care of, then you can mourn for the loss of the children. Not to be harsh or to offend anyone, but the kids are gone, and they are not coming back, the focus needs to be on the criminal so this person doesn't let this happen again.
