genes and bipolarism

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/science-news/science-news-about-bipolar-disorder.shtml

I beleive that bipolarism is in the genes. I find this article to be heading down the right path, mostly because of what I have been exposed to in the recent years. I have seen this mental illness up close and personal and seen it carried on from generation to generation. Also I have seen it in the siblings of that family. I hope that someday they can find a treatment that will maintain a constant stablization because this mental illness does not just affect the person who has it. It has lasting effects on the family, employment, and signifigant others.

  1. I have also have seen this illness in person. I hope that a cure will be discovered. The person that I know has it, she can be a while different person when she is deppressed. There is nothing I can do when she is like that. A cure is needed badly.

  2. I believe that Bipolarism is genetic as well. I have a friend whom has diffucult times. Some medications can help the symptoms but it will never take it away. As much as I would love to help my friend I know there really isn't much I can do for him other than be there for him when he needs me. Bipolar is definately not fun to deal with. A cure is definately needed very bad.

  3. I would have to agree to a point, as well, because I have to witnessed this disease to a closeness. I have a friend who's mother has this disease and has been battling this for her entire life. The point I would have a problem agreeing fully on is that it is carried through genes. I believe that it is possibly carried through a certain gene, but not just any because my friend was fortunate enough to not get it as was her brother. I also hope that there is someday a cure because it is an extremely horrible and expensive burden that the people with it and their families have to live with all of their lives.

  4. I have a realative with this, and it is a major strain on him. Unfortunately, while it can be medicated, there is no cure. Hopefully someday one will be found

  5. I have to agree with Tasha on this one, I am not fully convinced that it is genetic. A close friend of mine is bipolar and he is the only one in his family that has this disease. If other family members of his had this disease then I would perhaps consider the possibility of it being genetic.

  6. That illness isn't a nice one at all. I don't believe for sure that it is genetic. One day I hope to see a cure for it.

  7. I somewhat agree that it is found in genes and is carried down to certain individuals. I think this disorder is quite amazing if you see it in someone because it is like a whole different person one minute to the next in certain cases. It's sad and scary because they do not even really see it. There really needs to be a cure for the people who suffer from it. We should be thankful if we do not have it because it is not an easy thing to go through. A lot of people do not even like to associate with these people because you just do not know what mood they are going to be in and they are pretty much to hard to handle at times. So a cure would be successfully a good thing and hopefully we can get one soon.

  8. It actually is said that Bipolarism is passed on in the family like its hereditary. But it also says that it will skip a generation. My ex husband was diagnosed with Bipolar and it really explains why he and I had a problem. They singled it out because both of his parents didn't have it so they didn't think that would have been the problem. But come to find out it did skip a generation in his family. My ex husband's grandmother on his mom's side is Bipolar. And I know a couple more people who has it as well and it skipped a generation in their family as well. So who knows.
