Compliance

Compliance is an important part of the social influence, not group influence. A lot of times the use of different forms of compliance can leave a person feeling cheated. Most forms of compliance are tricks to get a person to do what they want.

The article I found focuses on compliance and the two common techniques that lead to compliance. These techniques are: (1) The "foot in the door" effect, this is the idea that if you get your foot in the door a sale is no problem. This type of technique is used by door to door salesmen, and is seen as the best way to get in the door. They usually start by asking something simple like can you fill out a survey, as an icebreaker. (2) The second technique is the "face in the door" effect. This focuses on asking for something big first knowing that the request will be denied so that when you ask for something small that request will probably be acknowledged. In this situation the person only whats the small favor, but asks the big favor as a set up.

TMS therapy

A drug free method of treating depression is being conducted at 19 clinics around the country. The non-invasive treatment is TMS therapy. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a process that activates neurons by low amounts of electric currents that are directed at specific regions of the brain with rapidly changing magnetic fields. Its performed in clinical setting. A person receives multiple treatment that are about 40 minutes long from a system that is designed by Neuro Star.

Neuro Stars system was tested on two control groups. One group was a placebo group. The second group consisted of people who had major depression and all had tried multiple ant-depressants with little success treating their depression. Statistically speaking the second group had greater results compared to the placebo group. One of the ways results where measured was by using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Only about 5% didn't finish the test.

Out of ten thousand TMS therapy's performed the biggest side effect reported by patients was scalp pain during the treatment. This effect was less after the first week of therapy.

Out of the two groups tested the article only gave the amount of participants for the second group(164 patients). This troublesome to me because the tested groups should have been even in order to have a good example.

Over all this system is something I'll defiantly be watching for in the news. If neurons are being manipulated with out drugs to help depression I'm curious or even a little afraid of what could be next. It is also work that gives me hope for the use of less drugs to treat symptoms that may not be life threatening but still have an adverse effect on peoples lives. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/124958.php

Facebook, a popular social networking site with nearly 500 million members; has recently added a function to anonymously ask one of your "friends" questions. I found this very interesting, as I think online social networks are really changing the way people communicate. The ability to ask a question to someone you know, in such a low stress environment is something you couldn't have achieved as easily 60 years ago. With the introduction of so many ways to communicate on-line, social standards, habits, culture are all changing. And its much easier to gather information on other people. I wish to see the trend of social technology continuing to grow.

The Brain and Brain Injury

This article discusses the brain, more specifically, brain injury that takes place in the axons. I find it interesting that the studies that have been done so far have done very little to actually find a way to cure, or fix the damage these types of injury cause.
The first part of the article discusses a new part of training in the NFL. Players are now expected to undergo a number of cognitive tests to determine a baseline for their brain function. The trainers do this using a computer; the player has to remember positions of X’s and O’s on the screen and match colors to the words that describe them. The trainers are using these tests as a tool that can be used if a player is to get a head injury while playing. The player can retake the test post-injury and it can be determined if he has any cognitive problems. I wonder if other sports are going to start using this same technology. In the NHL, it used to be that hockey players could play immediately after a concussion. Now, players can be thrown out of the league after 3 major concussions.
The second part of the article explains axons and how damage occurs to them. It seems that an axon can stretch almost twice its normal length if stretched slowly and then slowly retract. This stretching, provided it is slow, does not harm the axon. I think of stretching chewed bubblegum. Axons are flexible in this way unless they are stretched suddenly and fast (like when a hockey player’s head smashes into the ice). When this happens the axon “kinks, swells, and eventually falls apart.” The axon still looks like an axon but inside its structure is destroyed. This type of injury is called diffuse axonal injury. It is just in the early stages of study but it has been found in athletes, people who have experienced the shock wave from a bomb, or whiplash in an auto accident (Zimmer, 2010).
Finally, the article talks about what happens to the axon after the injury. The sodium/calcium exchange gets altered and the axon will die. It also goes on to say that there are no treatments or cures for brain injury. They do think that this type of study could help in possibly finding ways to treat injury once they have happened.

Perceptual Blindness How We All Tend To Without Noticing It:

Perceptual blindness I just find intriguing because I almost forgot about it until the discussion in class and how the brain just works in mysterious ways that we do no even notice at times because we are so involved in other stuff around us that we find more entertaining.
Perceptual blindness is how we do not see certain things that can even be right in front of our faces and we do not even pay attention to them because we have our selection attention on something else. Just like we saw in class when we saw the video of the kids playing basketball how we focused on how many shoots were being passed between the some people in the white shirts and some in the black shirts. Since that is what we were focusing on some of us did not notice the person in the gorilla suit.It is something that happens all the time and we just do not even see it because we only want to notice the things we want to notice and ignore the rest.
Scientists say that it is the brain playing tricks on his and are primed to see and certain things are there in certain circumstances.They also say it plays a good role in our emotions. They say also that it can also demand on traits such as if we are an extrovert or introvert and how that can play a part on how we see things good or bad. They say that it is the visual part of us because it is what our eyes are seeing and only want they want to see.
So it is all basically on the video we saw in class and our discussion. It it just some amazing I find it how our brain can easily just play simple tricks on us like that. And how we do not even really realize it half the time unless someone points it out to us.

Changing Thoughts Key To Battling Depression

Depression has long been treated mostly by medication and psychotherapy with an emphasis on behavior changes to improve depression. This article talks about new research that found a bigger improvement in depressed clients when the therapist concentrates on cognitive techniques rather than behavioral. Basically, instead of encouraging a client to get out of the house more often, the client is taught to change negative or faulty thinking into more accurate, positive and beneficial thinking.

This article really caught my attention because I am a big believer in mind over matter. I think that people who can think more positive lead a more happy and healthy life. Though I do believe that as some people grow up they somehow learn negative views of themselves which leads to negative views of the world around them which then extends to their futures. It’s a big negative circle they get caught in. Others learn to think about themselves, the world, and the future in a more realistic and positive way. This article and my personal believes lead me to wonder why we don’t teach these techniques in school. If we did, maybe there would be less depressed people in the world.

Pain

As we learned about neuroanatomy and genetic psychology. I started to wonder if researchers are experimenting with gene splitting in hopes of dealing with psych disorders like schizophrenia. I was disappointed not be able to find more research being conducted on the effects or possibility of gene therapy on the psych. It's seem like most research is being done on disease and of course there are worries of athletes gene doping to improve performance.

I did find a article related to our studies. Here's the link. I found out that an experiment using gene therapy to help chronic pain patients is being done. Its a complicated process being done with rats. A viral vector( a tool used to deliver genetic material to cells)is cultured to carry the prepro-b-endorphin gene to primary sensory neurons. The viral vector is targeting specific opiate receptors and causes them to activate. The vector is injected into the rat's spinal fluid once. This one injection left the rat pain free for up to three months.

This article I think will give you a taste of what is possible with gene splitting. Its also describes some great research being done for controlling pain. Currently chronic pain is masked with powerful opiates that have severe side affects on the patient and our society.

The biggest criticism for gene therapy is surrounded around the question of being ethical or unethical. To me it's a better option than using stem cells. I'm glad the research is being done. I personally like to have options and feel like a person should have the right to choose as many treatment options as possible.
